Let the stone do the talking

Exposed aggregate removes the surface layer of cement paste to reveal the natural stone in the concrete mix.

The result is a rich, textured finish that is durable and looks good for decades. Its character comes from the aggregate itself.

How it’s achieved

  • Retarder washing – a retarder is applied to the mould face or surface, which slows the setting of the surface cement paste. Once the panel has hardened, typically the next day, the retarded layer is washed off with water to expose the aggregate, without damaging the stone.
  • Water washing – the surface is washed while the concrete is still green, often combined with other finishes for a softer look.

Light to heavy exposure

The depth of exposure can be tailored to the look you want:

  • Light – reveals the sand and the tips of the aggregate, for a subtle, fine texture
  • Medium – a balanced finish with the aggregate clearly visible
  • Heavy – the aggregate is the dominant feature, for a bold, deeply textured surface

Choosing your aggregate

Because the stone is on show, the aggregate selection defines the colour and character of the finish.

Combined with grey or white cement and pigments, the options are almost unlimited.

Choose from our suppliers’ aggregate ranges. See Colours on the Finishes page.

Where it works best

Exposed aggregate suits façades, feature walls, columns, landscape elements and public spaces.

Its texture also gives good slip resistance and hides minor weathering and marks, so it stays looking good in high-traffic and exposed locations.

Concrete is a natural material, so some variation in colour and aggregate is expected. See disclaimer on the Finishes page.
